Legal frameworks for single-use plastic management: Environmental challenges and solutions

Abstract: The use of polyethylene bags has been found to have more cons than pros. While it is a suitable choice of packaging for many, it contributes a lot to environmental pollution. Plastic bags contain harmful chemicals that when dumped, poisons the soil, water and everything in them. When incinerated, it is hazardous to the environment. Notwithstanding the hazard of plastic bags, it still remains the favorite choice of many, especially women in markets. This paper reviews the reasons for plastic bags being the women's favorite choice; which is largely connected to the economic living standard and long-term lifestyle of a large section of Nigerian women. The paper adopts the doctrinal methodology to consider the impact of plastic bags on the environment as well as human and animal life. Furthermore, the paper considers the role played by the environmental agencies and the existing laws and policies. It concludes by identifying a lack of awareness and proper education as a leading cause of the continued preference of plastic bags despite its multiple hazards. Finally, the paper recommends that a solution to the menace of plastic bags is to impose a ban on single-use plastic bags among others.
